Whale Watching Week Is Coming to Lincoln City, Oregon -- Dec. 26th - Jan 1st

Oregon Coast

This year’s whale watching week will begin on December 26th through January 1st. Every year, upwards of 150 volunteers will be posted from 10am – 1pm at official whale watching spots, where visitors have the best chance of seeing Pacific Grey Whales. The state’s program takes place at the peak of the southbound migration of gray whales. Marine mammologists estimate that 18,000 whales pass by between mid-December and mid-January, as they head south from the Arctic to the Baja lagoons of Mexico.

The main body of whales are about 5 mile off shore, but some can be seen as close as 1-2 miles off shore. Winter migration has the highest numbers (30 per hour) but the whales are usually farther off shore (1-5 miles) because of stormy weather.

Due to the rise of Pacific Grey Whales sightings, the Whale Watching Center of Depoe Bay, has decided to extend the event to Newport. In celebration, the marine Science center, located just down the road from the Oregon Coast Aquarium, is putting on a special whale watching event, which offers storytelling, interpretive programs and other activities during Whale Watch Week.

For further information or a registration form for the training weekend, contact Dave Newton, Whale Watch Volunteer Coordinator, Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, 198 NE 123rd Street, Newport, OR 97365, 541-765-3407; fax 541-765-3402; whale.watching@state.or.us; www.whalespoken.org. Preregistration is required because of limited space. You may register for training and/or sign up for whale watch week by mail, e-mail, phone, fax, or dropping in to visit at the Whale Watching Center on Highway 101at the south end of the bridge in Depoe Bay.

Coho's Commitment to Excellance

Travel and tourism is one of the world’s largest industries in operation today. With the year’s impending close, reflecting back on the nearly 1 billion tourists who explored the world in 2011, there’s an increasing importance for travelers to be conscious of their impact on the earth whilst on their journeys.  Yet, in the midst of the rising popularity of going “Green” and the trend of being environmentally friendly, it is easier to travel responsibly and with an effort to preserve and protect the environment of the place you're visiting.

On the Oregon Coast, we are blessed with incredible surroundings-- beautiful land, as well as a thriving ocean and a rich culture. We have a special duty to our area because of the delicate eco-systems and environments that share our habitation. As a locally-owned and operated hotel, we strive to help our visitors join in on this responsibility towards intentional conservation. We do this in many ways.  We have implemented continuing programs to conserve natural resources, reduce waste and minimize pollution. In partnership with the Green Hotels Associations, following is a sample of a few of the initiatives The Coho Oceanfront Lodge has committed to in being a “Green” hotel:

  • Low-flow sink aerators and low-flow showerheads
  • 1.6 gpm toilet or toilet adaptations
  • Fluorescent energy-saving lighting
  • Amenities - 100% natural, soy-based ink, vegetable-oil base, and dye-free
  • Paper products - recycled, biodegradable; No Styrofoam usage
  • Cleaning products and laundry detergents - nontoxic, phosphate-free, biodegradable and recycled packaging
  • Hot water - 125-130 degrees F (52-55 degrees C)
  • Linens changed between guests or on request only (towels on floor or in tub)
  • Bamboo-blended towels - natural antibacterial and moisture-wicking qualities
  • Extra blankets - room can be kept colder on winter nights if guests prefer
  • Recycling program in place; Recycling notice for guest involvement
  • Glass water glasses (not plastic)
  • Cloth laundry bags (retired sheets)
  • Digital heating thermometers
  • Hydronic heating system

Although travelling to and exploring new places and cultures is a positive endeavor, the potential harmful effects of tourism can have both local and global reaches. Travelling green is an important and essential way to care for the places you love to stay, preserving them for others to enjoy for years to come. As an added bonus, reducing your travelling footprint often makes for a more satisfying and authentic experience. With a mindful approach to travel, you are able to form deeper connections with the people and places you visit.

As part of this endeavor, before travelling, research your choices available for Eco-friendly lodging. “Green” hotels are environmentally-friendly properties whose managers are eager to institute programs that save water, save energy and reduce solid waste.  At The Coho Oceanfront Lodge (http://www.thecoholodge.com),  on the beautiful Oregon Coast, we are committed to do our part and make a small difference in making this a better, greener planet.

Drift Creek Falls

Written George Foust

Front Desk / Wine Social Host at The Coho Oceanfront Lodge

Leaving Lincoln City via Hwy 101 heading south; after approximately ¼ mile there is a turn to the left (large brown sign declaring Drift Creek Falls 12 miles); take this turn.  After about 2 miles you will come to a tee; turn left onto Road 17.  Proceed 10 miles via newly paved road to the trailhead.  There is a $5 fee or you can display your Forest Pass if you have one.

There is a fairly level trail, a little over a mile in length, to reach Drift Creek Falls.  This path seems to wind thru fairly typical coastal range forest; but do not despair!  The trail abruptly opens up to the south end of the 240ft suspension bridge that spans Drift Creek Falls at 100ft above it.  This span is unique in that it is a 30” wide, foot suspension bridge with a stiffening plate.  For the faint of heart, it does sway slightly, but by daring the trek, you reach the trail on the other side that will take you to the bottom of the falls for a magnificent view of a 70ft waterfall.

For those who have been to the falls before, a rock fall in August 2010 changed the falls from a horsetail configuration to a plunge falls and lowered the total height by about five feet.

After returning to the trailhead, continue north on Road 17 for 7 miles.  By staying straight you will now be on Bear Creek Road.  Continue for another 3.5 miles and you will reach Hwy 18 at Rose Lodge.  Before turning on to Hwy 18, you may want to stop and take a look at the restored Drift Creek Covered Bridge at this location.

Lost and Found

In days gone by, visitors searching Oregon’s beaches often found treasures from the east: blown glass floats, in intriguing shades of green and blue. Used by Japanese fishing crews to float their nets, these spheres were as small as two inches (5 cm) or as large as two feet (.6 m). They were hoarded, polished and adored, the ultimate find for a dedicated beachcomber.

Now that fishing vessels around the world use buoyant plastic, a blown glass float is a rare find – except on the beaches of Lincoln City, where more than 2,000 of them are found each winter. Annually we put out the number of floats reflected by the year – so 2001 floats were placed in 2001, 2002 in 2002, etc….

The project began in 1997, when a local artist first thought of glass floats as an intriguing way to launch the new millennium. Lincoln City sponsored the project, hosting the inaugural season in 1999-2000. Tourists came from around the country to search for their own brilliantly-colored, signed and numbered glass float.

For Lincoln City, the Millennium Float project was a perfect combination of art and the outdoors. Those who came in search of a float often found their way to area galleries, where unnumbered floats were available for sale along with a dizzying array of fine art glass from around the world.

The city continues the promotion annually, running from Mid-October to Memorial Day – with hand-crafted glass floats being placed along the 7-1/2 miles (12 km) of public beach in Lincoln City, from the Roads End area to the Cutler City area. You find it, you keep it!

Floats may be found above the high tide line and below the beach embankment. Floats will not be found in or on the cliffs. Please be aware of beach safety. Never turn your back on the ocean! Sneaker waves and the force of the ocean often move logs and can be unsafe. Floats are not hidden on the beaches during storms.

An exhibit of historic glass fishing floats can be viewed at the North Lincoln County Historical Museum.

When you find a float, call the Visitor and Convention Bureau, 800-452-2151 or 541-996-1274, and register your float. We will send a Certificate of Authenticity and information about the artists who crafted your float.

Special drawings are held monthly at the Visitor Center for glass floats. Bring a bag of beach trash to the Visitor Center, 540 NE Hwy 101, and fill out an entry form. Handicapped persons with a handicap sticker number are also eligible to enter and win a monthly float drawing.

Families and individuals can now come to the beach and experience the joy of searching for glass floats. It’s a perfect opportunity to start a new family tradition!

One of the Best Summer ever on Oregon Coast Likely to Continue For The Rest Of The Month

By Oregon Coast Beach Connection - http://www.beachconnection.net/news/bsumm081711_449.php

Oregon Coast

(Oregon Coast) – The statistics are backing it up. The anecdotal evidence is overwhelming. Even the National Weather Service has some substantial facts to back it up (above: it's been bikini and cabana weather in Cannon Beach as well as the rest of the coast).

This is not only the sunniest summer in recent memory on the Oregon coast, it’s likely to continue through into the middle of October.

“We are experiencing a very long stretch of sunny, beautiful weather,” said Rob Lee, Director of Operations of The Coho Oceanfront Lodge in Lincoln City. “Maybe a few clouds here and there on a few days, but nothing even remotely close to detering our guests who come to enjoy the sunny days."

Mellow conditions in the valley are helping keep the coast warmer, and they form the basis of a distinctly attractive phenomenon called the “Second Summer” on these beaches – one where September and October have the most inviting weather of the entire year along the coast.

The National Weather Service (NWS) and plenty of other weather reporting agencies are predicting similar conditions to last through Labor Day, which means the coast will likely stay bright, sunny and warm through that time.

Then, as September comes around, you can count on runs of really exceptional weather via this Second Summer. This likely means the Oregon coast will experience mostly beautiful weather straight through into the middle of the October.

At the National Weather Service office in Portland, senior meteorologist Treena Hartley acknowledged the forecast calls for similar conditions on the coast through Labor Day.

“Doesn’t look like it’s going to change anytime soon, so I think safe to say,” Hartley said.

Second Summer usually lasts until the middle of October, sometimes longer. While Hartley couldn’t predict the coast would remain in that pattern throughout the early fall, past years have shown that time of year does have more low winds and sunny skies than any other time of year.

A good example is last year, in 2010, when the coast had just a handful of sunny days during July and August, a dismal, cloudy period that snagged the nickname “the bummer summer.” But when September and October rolled around, the Second Summer fun kicked in.

All this could translate into primarily sunny, dry and warm conditions for the next two months. Rain and clouds will likely appear sometime in September and October, but usually those two months remain mostly lovely.

Conditions now are quite similar to those that create that coveted weather in early fall: the temperature differences between the coast and inland Oregon are less, thus allowing winds from the east to permeate.

However, Hartley said the difference between now and the patterns of early fall is that this area has been receiving a series of weather systems that allow warmer east winds to linger at the coast.

The small difference in temperatures between inland and the beaches has been one factor, but not the largest.

“A bigger factor has been the upper level troughs we’ve come through,” Hartley said. “It’s all tied in, because that’s kept inland temperatures kind’a cool. Because when the inland temperature warms up a lot, the temperature differences between the two get more onshore winds and that creates lower cloud cover that stays there forever. We haven’t been getting that.”

Hartley said the upper level troughs and other systems keep coming, letting the prime conditions remain.

The north coast, from Manzanita and Cannon Beach northward into the Washington coast, has been experiencing more clouds than the central or south coast. But almost uniformly these cloudy moments have been earlier in the day and the clouds burn off in the afternoon.

One of the Best Summer ever on Oregon Coast Likely to Continue Two Months
