"Whale Watching Spoken Here" Needs Volunteers

"Article By Oregon.gov"

Bruce Mate and Denise Herzing from the Hatfield Marine Science Center were counting Gray whales migrating past Yaquina Head Lighthouse in 1978, when Don Giles, also of the Science Center, headed out to the lighthouse with his binoculars and a great idea. He realized that Gray whales migrate past the Oregon coast during two special times of the year. The southbound migration peaks just around the winter holiday season and the northbound migration has one of its two peaks near the end of March during spring break. This created the best possible match of whales and visitors!

Don created the Whale Watching Spoken Here program that year to help visitors spot Gray whales and learn a bit about them. Since the main emphasis of the program is on volunteers meeting and greeting visitors interested in whales and whale migration, Don Giles and Bev Lund coined the phrase “Whale Watching Spoken Here.”

Whale tail coming out of the water.

Since then, it has grown to encompass hundreds of trained volunteers who donate their time and expertise to help visitors see these amazing Gray whales and create a rewarding educational experience. The program places trained volunteers at 26 great whale-watching sites from 10 a.m.-
1 p.m. during the winter and spring watch weeks.

A summer whale watch week was added in 2004, but discontinued
in 2007 because of the misconception that we only had whales one week during the summer, when we really have them all summer long. The advantage of summer watching is the whales are really close to shore. Summer whale watching is from June through October, but the peak times are August, September and October.

The program now holds three training sessions at different locations (north, central and south coast) to make it easier for volunteers to be trained without having to travel to Newport.

Volunteers Needed!  It requires about 450 volunteers to cover one week of watching at the 28 locations. Come and join us.

-----

Once you are done with a hard day of volunteer work, you should treat yourself to a relaxing stay at The Coho Oceanfront Lodge of Lincoln City, Oregon.  Known for it's newly renovated hotel, The Coho has a spectacular, full ocean view, great for a relaxing night in.

Finders Keepers Is Back!

Glass Floats on the beach in Lincoln City, Oregon

The project began in 1997, when a local artist first thought of glass floats as an intriguing way to launch the new millennium. Lincoln City sponsored the project, hosting the inaugural season in 1999-2000. Tourists came from around the country to search for their own brilliantly-colored, signed and numbered glass float.

For Lincoln City the Millennium Float project was a perfect combination of art and the outdoors. Those who came in search of a float often found their way to area galleries where unnumbered floats were available for sale, along with a dizzying array of fine art glass from around the world.

The city continues the promotion annually, running from Mid-October to Memorial Day – with hand-crafted glass floats being placed along the 7-1/2 miles (12 km) of public beach in Lincoln City, from the Roads End area to the Cutler City area. We put out the number of floats reflected by the year – so 2001 floats were placed in 2001, 2002 in 2002, etc…. You find it, you keep it!

Floats may be found above the tide line and below the beach embankment. Floats will not be found in or on the cliffs. Please be aware of beach safety. Never turn your back on the ocean! Sneaker waves and the force of the ocean often move logs and can be unsafe. Our fairies do not “drop” the floats on the beaches during storms.

When you find a float, call the Visitor and Convention Bureau (VCB), 800-452-2151 or 541-996-1274, and register your float. We will send a Certificate of Authenticity and information about the artists who crafted your float.

Bring everyone to the beach to experience the fun of float hunting. Start a new family tradition!

Remember, the floats can be dropped at any time of the day, so why not get a place at The Coho Oceanfront Lodge, one of Lincoln City Oregon's premier Hotels, and make a day (and night) of it!  To reserve your room, please call 541-994-3984 or visit http://www.thecoholodge.com.

In an ongoing effort to provide our guests a more comfortable stay, The Coho Oceanfront Lodge is proud to announce the addition of a guest laundry. The guest laundry includes two, energy efficient washers and a large commercial dryer.

“Having the option to ‘get dirty’, without worrying about having clean cloths, gives an extra layer of freedom for guests looking for a true getaway. It is amazing that something as simple as a clean shirt can turn a vacation from good to extraordinary”, say Jeramy Anderson, Systems Coordinator of The Coho Oceanfront Lodge, one of the best Lincoln City Hotels, http://www.thecoholodge.com .

Washing machines are available for $2.00 per load, and dryers are available for $1.50 per load as well. Detergent and laundry sheets are available for $1 each. The Coho’s guest laundry will be open from 9am – 10pm every day of the week.

Wine Social
Every Friday, The Coho Oceanfront Lodge hosts a weekly wine reception so that travelers wishing to relax after a long drive can enjoy a glass of red or white Northwest wine.  Besides wine tasting, the wine social offers a variety of hors d'œuvre, as well as complimentary ten minute chair massages.

For all those unaware, a chair massage is a type of body work performed while the subject is sitting in a special chair. It allows him to lean forward so his neck, back and shoulders are easy for the therapist to reach, as these are the areas of concentration. Chair massages are done while the person is fully clothed, and they don't use cream or oil.

Our chair massages are done on site by local professionals and are tailored to the individuals needs.

For more information, please call 541-994-3684.

Oregon Coasts Commitment to Going Green

Beach

Travel and tourism is one of the world's largest industries in operation today. With the year's impending close, reflecting back on the nearly 1 billion tourists who explored the world in 2011, there's an increasing importance for travelers to be conscious of their impact on the earth whilst on their journeys. Yet, in the midst of the rising popularity of going "Green" and the trend of being environmentally friendly, it is easier to travel responsibly and with an effort to preserve and protect the environment of the place you're visiting.

On the Oregon Coast, we are blessed with incredible surroundings– beautiful land, as well as a thriving ocean, and a rich culture. We have a special duty to our area because of the delicate eco-systems and environments that share our habitation. As a locally-owned and operated hotel, we strive to help our visitors join in on this responsibility towards intentional conservation. We do this in many ways. We have implemented continuing programs to conserve natural resources, reduce waste and minimize pollution. In partnership with the Green Hotels Associations, following is a sample of a few of the initiatives The Coho Oceanfront Lodge has committed to in being a "Green" hotel:

- Low-flow sink aerators and low-flow showerheads
- 1.6 gpm toilet or toilet adaptations
- Fluorescent energy-saving lighting
- Amenities – 100% natural, soy-based ink, vegetable-oil base, and dye-free
- Paper products – recycled, biodegradable; No Styrofoam usage
- Cleaning products and laundry detergents – nontoxic, phosphate-free, biodegradable and recycled packaging
- Hot water – 125-130 degrees F (52-55 degrees C)
- Linens changed between guests or on request only (towels on floor or in tub)
- Bamboo-blended towels – natural antibacterial and moisture-wicking qualities
- Extra blankets – room can be kept colder on winter nights if guests prefer
- Recycling program in place; Recycling notice for guest involvement
- Glass water glasses (not plastic)
- Cloth laundry bags (retired sheets)
- Digital heating thermometers
- Hydronic heating system

Although traveling to and exploring new places and cultures is a positive endeavor, the potential harmful effects of tourism can have both local and global reaches. Traveling green is an important and essential way to care for the places you love to stay, preserving them for others to enjoy for years to come. As an added bonus, reducing your traveling footprint often makes for a more satisfying and authentic experience. With a mindful approach to travel, you are able to form deeper connections with the people and places you visit. As part of this endeavor, before traveling, research your choices available for Eco-friendly lodging. "Green" hotels are environmentally-friendly properties whose managers are eager to institute programs that save water, save energy and reduce solid waste. At The Coho Oceanfront Lodge on the beautiful Oregon Coast, we are committed to do our part and make a small difference in making this a better, greener planet.

The Coho Joins Forces With Clean The World

Process.png

At the Coho Oceanfront Lodge, www.thecoholodge.com, we are committed to do our part and make a small difference in making this a better, greener planet.  That is why when we had the opportunity to join Clean The World, we jumped at the chance.

The ideas is simple enough, collect soap and other amenities used by the hospitality industry and recycles them into usable products that get sent to third world countries; though the execution can get a little tricky.

As you could imagine, used soaps and amenities are a breeding ground for such diseases as Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aerogenes, Salmonella typhymurium, and Staphylococcus aureus.  However, Clean The World is committed to maintaining an environmentally and hygienically safe recycling process. As the world’s first, high volume soap recycler, Clean the World ensures that all bars of soap recycled and distributed domestically and abroad are completely safe and will not harm the end user due to disease or pathogens that can be transmitted if proper re-purposing does not exist.

Clean the World; a 501 not for profit organization is supported by the generous contributions of individuals and organizations worldwide, through Hospitality Recycling Program fees, in-kind donations, and fundraising events.  To date, Clean The World has delivered more than 9.5 million pounds of soap, and over 200,000 pounds of shampoo and conditioner.

For more information about Clean The World, or to find out how you can get involved, please visit www.cleantheworld.org

What makes the Coho unique?

There are so many hotels, motels, and inns along the Oregon Coast, why should you choose The Coho as your lodging destination?  Here are some of the reasons why we are confident you will be delighted with your decision to stay with us:

Best Practices:  We combine the best practices of major hotel chains with intimate and personalized touches of a small luxury boutique hotel.  The Coho is operated by VIP Hospitality Inc., a hotel management and development company with 75+ years in combined hospitality industry experience.  Our mission is to provide the most comfortable, memorable, and fun-filled stay for our guests by providing exceptional service and a picture-perfect setting which includes our beautifully renovated rooms.  VIP Hospitality operates under the following guiding principles:

Vision: Today, more than ever, the lodging industry is saturated with cookie-cutter brands looking to offer their products/services to the mass with little differentiation.  We strive to be a visionary in the industry by providing a unique product and service that our customers desire and our employees feel proud being a part of.
Integrity: We truly believe the most profitable business practice over the long- run is to do all things with integrity and live out the following biblical verse:  “Do to others as you would have them do to you.” (Luke 6:31)
Passion: We love what we do and will strive to show our passion through the products and services offered.  Ultimately, we are not in a room rental-business but in the business of creating lasting memories. Passion will shine through our employee’s’ friendliness and smiles, cleanliness and crispness of our facilities, and creativity of our services offering.

We are a member of the Oregon Q Care program with 100% of our front desk associates having successfully gone through the quality certification process.

Renovation and Repositioning:  In 2006, the owners made a commitment to fully renovate and reposition the property into a boutique hotel.  The Coho always had amazing views, but the facilities were starting to tire.  Over the next several years, after thorough research, careful planning and several million dollars, The Coho was reborn and is today considered one of the best hotels in the Pacific Northwest.

  • Décor:  Modern retro touches with warm coastal palettes and unique local flavors.  Luxury touches abound, such as large stone gas fireplaces, 32” LCD HDTV, Lumicor glass panels, granite-top vanity, imported tiles from Italy, and comfortable deep-seated lounge chairs. Adorned on the guestroom walls are colorful pictures of sea corals and other sea life.
  • Concept:  An upscale boutique hotel with exceptional finishes, breathtaking views, and down-to-earth personalized service.

Fogarty Creek, a beach to explore

Distance from The Coho: 10.9 miles

Have you ever experienced an embarrassing moment in front of your friends and neighbors? The kind of embarrassing moment that they just won’t let you forget? Well, it could be worse: the site of your embarrassing moment could forever bare your name!  To my surprise, that’s exactly the case for one of my favorite Oregon Coast Parks.  Apparently, Fogarty Creek State Park, is named after John J. Fogarty, who was an Oregon Pioneer as well as a County Commissioner in the early 1900’s.  So, why was this beautiful little park named after him? Because he fell in the creek.  Story goes, he was scouting either the site of a new bridge, or, for a place to build a cabin, when he got a bit too close to the slippery bank and went for an “unscheduled swim”!  He was dressed to the nines when this fall took place, and his friends and neighbors who witnessed the fall, found his blunder to be such a comical event that they started calling the area Fogarty Creek.

Located between Lincoln Beach and Depoe Bay, today, Fogarty Creek is a State Park.   There are restroom facilities, picnic benches, fields, and even a covered gazebo-like-structure in case of rain.  The real gem though is the beach.  From the parking lot, follow either of the trails along the banks of the creek, under the Hwy, to the Edge of the Pacific.

Directions from The Coho

-Take NW 17th Ave East to Hwy 101

-Turn Right, to head South on 101

-Head South for 10.5 miles, just past the Depoe Bay-kery, turn Left to access Fogarty Creek State Park

Andaman Thai Lincoln City, Oregon, By George Foust

Folks who enjoy genuine Thai food are in for a real treat at the Andaman Thai restaurant in Lincoln City, Oregon.  The couple who own it are personable and friendly and the wife is from Thailand so the food is absolutely authentic.

If you choose to indulge at the Andaman, please be patient.  Food is not pre-prepared.  There is about a 30 minute wait between the time you order and the food’s arrival at your table.  It is worth every second.

My Lady and I very rarely go out to eat because we love getting into the kitchen together and dinking around.  She grows her own herbs and we delight in experimentation so going out to eat is not the same for us as it is for other people.  Because we go out so rarely, we tend to be in a rut when it comes to ordering.  My Lady usually orders either the Pad Kee Mao with Shrimp or the Garlic Prawns.  I am very much in a rut; I enjoy the Panang Seafood and Salmon Curry so much that I don’t even bother with looking at the menu anymore.

For those with trepidations, when your waitress asks you if you want mild or medium, go for the medium; the mild is truly mild.  I am a firm believer that “there is no such thing as spicy food – only weak people” so I always ask for “Wild & Crazy” and sometimes even get extra peppers and sauce on the side depending on my mood.
Like most restaurants in Lincoln City, you will find the portions to be more than adequate but for folks with a real trencherman’s appetite, order the “Oh My God” appetizer to relish while waiting for your entrée.

The Inn at Wecoma (http://www.innatwecoma.com),and The Coho Oceanfront Lodge,  would like to recommend Andaman Thai of Lincoln City, Oregon to all travelers.

A Visual Guide To Oregon Coast Ghost Forests (Part 3)

Please click to read Part 1 & Part 2

So, how did this happen?
It's thought that these trees were killed between two and four thousand years ago; it would have taken a dramatic event- the ground level dropped 25 feet! So, an earthquake, for example, hits the coast, the ground drops, and then water and silt/sand rush in and bury the trees.  This action deprived the wood of oxygen, which is why they are still here today for us to marvel at.

Another bonus to these beauties are the incredible mixtures of textures that appear

Guest Laundry Facilities And Wine Socials At The Coho Oceanfront Lodge

Guest Laundry Facilities
In an ongoing effort to provide our guests a more comfortable stay, The Coho Oceanfront Lodge is proud to announce the addition of a guest laundry. The guest laundry includes two, energy efficient washers and a large commercial dryer.

“Having the option to ‘get dirty’, without worrying about having clean cloths, gives an extra layer of freedom for guests looking for a true getaway. It is amazing that something as simple as a clean shirt can turn a vacation from good to extraordinary”, say Jeramy Anderson, Systems Coordinator of The Coho Oceanfront Lodgehttp://www.thecoholodge.com .

Value is Big Draw for The Coho Oceanfront Lodge

Lincoln City Hotels Oregon Sunset Suite

No matter how much you travel, it's always delightful to find unexpected values while on the road, such as those provided by The Coho Oceanfront Lodge in Lincoln City, Ore. And everyone will get something free to enjoy-kids, parents, grandparents and adult couples.

Travelers will first appreciate the freshly ground, free coffee and a just-baked cookie at the front desk. But the most popular item is the free, hearty continental breakfast that goes beyond coffee, juice and rolls to include freshly made waffles, biscuits and gravy, oatmeal, fresh fruit, hard boiled eggs, pastries and muffins.

The Coho, located in the heart of Lincoln City at 1635 N.W. Harbor, also has added a second complimentary wine reception so that travelers wishing to relax after a long drive can enjoy a glass of red or white Northwest wine on both Wednesdays and Fridays. Also on Fridays, hotel guests are further pampered with chair massages.

Unlike big city hotels, The Coho Oceanfront Lodge does not charge for parking nor for wireless Internet service. Kids and adults both will enjoy free use of board games and binoculars which let guests scan the horizon of the vast Pacific Ocean. Weather permitting, adults also may request free use of gas fire pits, all the better to set a romantic mood on the Oregon Coast. Canadian visitors also will receive a free, crisp $10 American bill, subject to requirements.

In addition to the freebies, many of the hotel's packages will be well worth the extra fee. For example, an extra $49 will get you the Beach Bonfire Package that includes firewood, roasting sticks for hot dogs, graham crackers, chocolate and marshmallows for s 'mores, a beach mat and beach bag.

The Kids' Beach Package is just $25 and includes two kiddy kites, beach toys, snacks, a beach ball, beach towel, family guide with a list of local and family friendly destinations, unlimited DVD rentals and unlimited use of board games. For more information on the hotel, rates, availability and additional packages, please call 541-994-3684.

Harts Cove Hike

Getting there: Head north from Lincoln City on US 101. Take the Neskowin ramp (left) at the junction of Hwy 18 and US 101. Continue north for about 3.5 miles. Turn west (left) onto unpaved Road 1861, stay left at the fork about 2.6 miles to stay on 1861 for another 1.9 miles. This will bring you to a sign marking the beginning of Harts Cove Trail.

To protect endangered butterflies and fragile wildflowers on the headland, the access road gate is closed from January 1st to July 15th. Be aware that after persistent rains, the Harts Cove Trail can be muddy; wear appropriate footgear, not sneakers and definitely not flip-flops. Also, some places along the trail are more vulnerable to the coastal winds.

The Hart’s Cove Trail is a 5.2 mile RT hike (moderately difficult due to the 1000ft elevation change) that starts out by switch-backing downhill through a young coastal forest. Railroad tie steps here help make footing better. Very little light reaches the forest floor and undergrowth is sparse. Don’t despair, you are not just in another piece of the coastal rain forest; you will reach your goal before much longer. After about half a mile, you’ll cross Cliff Creek Bridge and begin climbing a varied, moderate grade. Another mile brings you to a bench where you will get a glimpse of the headland. Do not go down the side trail here that takes off to the left thinking you will get a better view. You will be disappointed and simply have to climb back up. Half a mile further and you will be able to hear the sea lions and seals that make the other side of the cove their hangout. Once you reach the gorgeous meadow that was once part of the Taggard homestead, take the left-most path down the grassy bluff to the cliff-edge view point overlooking the cove for a marvelous vista of the Cove and Chitwood Creek Falls. The seals and sea lions you are hearing are out of sight around the promontory.

For the adventurous (not recommended for children), climb back up about 50 yards to a junction and head seaward. A challenging scramble down this trail leads down to the edge of this lava rock headland. The waves alternately display and hide barnacles, sea stars and sea palms. Remember, wherever you climb down, you will have to climb back up.

After a nice long hike, why not relax at The Coho Oceanfront Lodge?  Our newly renovated hotel features a luxurios indoor heated pool, jacuzzi and sauna, as well as a selection of spa services.  For more information, visit http://www.thecoholodge.com.
