"Whale Watching Spoken Here" Needs Volunteers

"Article By Oregon.gov"

Bruce Mate and Denise Herzing from the Hatfield Marine Science Center were counting Gray whales migrating past Yaquina Head Lighthouse in 1978, when Don Giles, also of the Science Center, headed out to the lighthouse with his binoculars and a great idea. He realized that Gray whales migrate past the Oregon coast during two special times of the year. The southbound migration peaks just around the winter holiday season and the northbound migration has one of its two peaks near the end of March during spring break. This created the best possible match of whales and visitors!

Don created the Whale Watching Spoken Here program that year to help visitors spot Gray whales and learn a bit about them. Since the main emphasis of the program is on volunteers meeting and greeting visitors interested in whales and whale migration, Don Giles and Bev Lund coined the phrase “Whale Watching Spoken Here.”

Whale tail coming out of the water.

Since then, it has grown to encompass hundreds of trained volunteers who donate their time and expertise to help visitors see these amazing Gray whales and create a rewarding educational experience. The program places trained volunteers at 26 great whale-watching sites from 10 a.m.-
1 p.m. during the winter and spring watch weeks.

A summer whale watch week was added in 2004, but discontinued
in 2007 because of the misconception that we only had whales one week during the summer, when we really have them all summer long. The advantage of summer watching is the whales are really close to shore. Summer whale watching is from June through October, but the peak times are August, September and October.

The program now holds three training sessions at different locations (north, central and south coast) to make it easier for volunteers to be trained without having to travel to Newport.

Volunteers Needed!  It requires about 450 volunteers to cover one week of watching at the 28 locations. Come and join us.

-----

Once you are done with a hard day of volunteer work, you should treat yourself to a relaxing stay at The Coho Oceanfront Lodge of Lincoln City, Oregon.  Known for it's newly renovated hotel, The Coho has a spectacular, full ocean view, great for a relaxing night in.

Finders Keepers Is Back!

Glass Floats on the beach in Lincoln City, Oregon

The project began in 1997, when a local artist first thought of glass floats as an intriguing way to launch the new millennium. Lincoln City sponsored the project, hosting the inaugural season in 1999-2000. Tourists came from around the country to search for their own brilliantly-colored, signed and numbered glass float.

For Lincoln City the Millennium Float project was a perfect combination of art and the outdoors. Those who came in search of a float often found their way to area galleries where unnumbered floats were available for sale, along with a dizzying array of fine art glass from around the world.

The city continues the promotion annually, running from Mid-October to Memorial Day – with hand-crafted glass floats being placed along the 7-1/2 miles (12 km) of public beach in Lincoln City, from the Roads End area to the Cutler City area. We put out the number of floats reflected by the year – so 2001 floats were placed in 2001, 2002 in 2002, etc…. You find it, you keep it!

Floats may be found above the tide line and below the beach embankment. Floats will not be found in or on the cliffs. Please be aware of beach safety. Never turn your back on the ocean! Sneaker waves and the force of the ocean often move logs and can be unsafe. Our fairies do not “drop” the floats on the beaches during storms.

When you find a float, call the Visitor and Convention Bureau (VCB), 800-452-2151 or 541-996-1274, and register your float. We will send a Certificate of Authenticity and information about the artists who crafted your float.

Bring everyone to the beach to experience the fun of float hunting. Start a new family tradition!

Remember, the floats can be dropped at any time of the day, so why not get a place at The Coho Oceanfront Lodge, one of Lincoln City Oregon's premier Hotels, and make a day (and night) of it!  To reserve your room, please call 541-994-3984 or visit http://www.thecoholodge.com.

The Coho Oceanfront Lodge Adds Even More Amenities

Guest Laundry Facilities
In an ongoing effort to provide our guests a more comfortable stay, The Coho Oceanfront Lodge is proud to announce the addition of a guest laundry. The guest laundry includes two, energy efficient washers and a large commercial dryer.

“Having the option to ‘get dirty’, without worrying about having clean cloths, gives an extra layer of freedom for guests looking for a true getaway. It is amazing that something as simple as a clean shirt can turn a vacation from good to extraordinary”, say Jeramy Anderson, Systems Coordinator of The Coho Oceanfront Lodge, one of the best Lincoln City Hotels, http://www.thecoholodge.com .

Washing machines are available for $2.00 per load, and dryers are available for $1.50 per load as well. Detergent and laundry sheets are available for $1 each. The Coho’s guest laundry will be open from 9am – 10pm every day of the week.

Wine Social
Every Friday, The Coho Oceanfront Lodge hosts a weekly wine reception so that travelers wishing to relax after a long drive can enjoy a glass of red or white Northwest wine.  Besides wine tasting, the wine social offers a variety of hors d'œuvre, as well as complimentary ten minute chair massages.

For all those unaware, a chair massage is a type of body work performed while the subject is sitting in a special chair. It allows him to lean forward so his neck, back and shoulders are easy for the therapist to reach, as these are the areas of concentration. Chair massages are done while the person is fully clothed, and they don't use cream or oil.

Our chair massages are done on site by local professionals and are tailored to the individuals needs.

For more information, please call 541-994-3684.
