Second Summer in Lincoln City, OR

Oregon

The Northwest has recently been hit with a bout of drastic weather- from wind and rain- to abnormal amounts of snowfall. This wintry pattern throughout the week presents a potentially historic storm that will move across the region. Last weekend, here at the Coho, we even got snow! Snowfall directly onto the beach is a beautiful and rare sight.

But don’t get too comfy, here's a secret.

Don't let the stereotype of nasty coastal weather in winters keep you from planning a quiet ocean get-away in the near future. Statistics from years' past have proved that though the Valley assumes it's gloomy on the coast- there might be a clear and glorious day awaiting you on the beach. The trends from most years have the same pattern: about a week or slightly more of absolutely dry days - or almost dry days - in December and January, with temperatures around the 50's. By February, you'll find almost two straight weeks of no rain and somewhat spring-like temperatures (AKA “Second Summer”).

The locals know that some of the best days in Lincoln City are in the winter; so surf on over to our site to plan your next winter escape. Make sure you check road conditions before you head out, and we'll see you soon.

The Secret of Orego Coast Weather

The northwest has recently been hit with a bout of drastic weather- from wind and rain- to abnormal amounts of snow fall. Hunker down- grab a nice book, put on a cup of tea. But here's a secret. Don't let the stereotype of nasty coastal weather in winters keep you from planning a quiet ocean get-away. Statistics from years' past have proved that though the Valley assumes it's gloomy on the coast- there might be a clear and glorious day awaiting you on the beach.  the trends from most years have the same pattern: about a week or slightly more of absolutely dry days - or almost completely dry days - in December and January, with temperatures floating around the 50's. By February, you'll find almost two weeks of no rain and somewhat spring-like temperatures. The locals know that some of the best days in Lincoln City are in the winter; so surf on over to our site to plan your next winter escape. Hanging Out With the Sea Stars

Pre-Dawn, at the tide pools nearest to The Coho Oceanfront Lodge (photos by Liza Carlson)

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a sea star? You'd have five arms, and thousands of feet.  Five eyes, but practically blind.  If you lost an arm, within a year, you'd be able to grow a new one.  For dinner, you'd need to find a fellow sea creature (usually clams, mussels, limpits, small fish, barnacles and oysters) pry it open (if needed) and then proceed to move your stomach OUTSIDE of your body, in order to digest your meal! You would never need a blood-transfusion, because don't need blood!  In fact, your vascular system would contain only sea water!

If you lived on the Oregon Coast, you'd probably be an Ochre Star (Pisaster ochraceus).  You'd be big and bright and beautiful, and easy to spot given your colorful skin- you'd be orange, red or purple.  You would spend your days and nights clinging to a rock in the Tidal Zone on one of the many beautiful beaches that Oregon has to offer.  Twice a day the water would move in, beating you and your friends for hours, but with those rough waves, the chances of finding food goes up. Once low tide arrived, you'd be exposed to the sun and wind and rain, but you'd be easy to spot for the two-leggeds wandering the beach.  You might even be visited by a curious human or two, drawn by your brightness and rough skin, don't worry though, visitors here understand and appreciate your beauty- they might say hi, but they'll never hurt you.

We have an incredible community of sea stars right here on the beach below The Coho Oceanfront Lodge, come on down and say hi to one today.

If you'd like to learn more about these fascinating creatures, check out the Newport Aquarium during your visit!

Thanks For Stopping By, we look forward to your next visit

Wood, Whales & Weather OH MY

So many reasons to come to the Oregon Coast!  If your interests run towards a beautiful mix of craft & skill, than the Woodcarving Show is for you!  This yearly event (Jan 14 & 15) is brought to you by the Coastal Carvers, and will be hosted by the Chinook Winds Casino, inside the  Convention Center.  The show will be featuring carvings and tools for sale, as well as free wood carving classes for kids and adults. Show begins at 10AM daily. Free admission!

The gray whale migration is nearing the end of it's winter run, come out and see these magnificant beasts before they reach California.  Just a few days ago, a guest returned a pair of binoculars with the announcement that he had seen 4 whales from his balcony!  What a sight to behold, right from your Coho room.

We've had a wild week of weather out here- the perfect weather for any tried and true Oregon experience!  High winds, a bit of drizzle and incredible surf make for the perfect view from any of our Oceanfront rooms.  Get out and feel the weather on the beach, then return to your room for a glass of wine by the fireplace- the perfect combo for any winter coast vacation. Don't get me wrong though- there have been a few sunny days peeking through- make a reservation now and see if you can catch one!

We look forward to seeing you,
